CHAPTER 4a

I have collected several photos to illustrate each design principle for this assignment and must admit that it is difficult to choose which favorite photo to post.

Symmetrical Balance:

This is an example of Symmetrical Balance. If you draw an imaginary line through the center of the image, both sides are similar.

Asymmetrical Balance:

I used channel mixer for this photo. There is a balance of shadow and light. The fence seems larger on the right side but is balanced by the shadow on the left.

Scale Change:

This photo shows a size relationship in comparison of the mower operator to the water truck in the center (background). Size and distance of these objects show a visual hierarchy.

Dominance:

For lack of a decent background, I took the photo outside in the snow to show the blue color of the bottle and its size standing out in relation to the rest of the images. The blue bottle is the established weight over the smaller bottles.

Repetition:

The lemons are repeated in the image and contribute to merge and unify the composition.

Pattern:

This photo is a mosaic that I made a few years ago. It shows a repeated arrangement in the pattern that gives equal importance to each element.

CHAPTER 3 : GRAPGIC INSECTS

BLACK WIDOW SPIDER EMBLEM

I came up with this idea sometime today, driving down the road, shoveling snow, who knows. John suggested that I use the spider as an emblem for a "fictitious" company. What I had time for was this idea of a neighborhood watch group. The W.Y.B. stands for "Watch Your Back". It speaks to the would-be thief, robber, or any predator that the neighborhood is watching and waiting. The message says that any perpetrator will be caught without him/her knowing it.

I scanned the widow spider from a sketch, opened it in PS, drew the thief with the pen and line tool and added the text.

GRAPHIC COMPOSITION EXTRAS

While researching the black widow spider for this assignment I came across images of webs that I wanted to share.

GRAPHIC REDUCTION 1

For this photo, I opened it in PS and used image > adjustments > black and white. The results were fantastic with the dew drops on the web and black background.

GRAPHIC REDUCTION 2

This photo I opened in PS also and changed resolutions. No fancy tricks here, I loved the way it looked. I scanned it using the scanners inverted color selection to reveal contrast.

CHAPTER 3 : GRAPHIC INSECT

STUDY SKETCH

For this project, I decided to research the behavior, anatomy, and physical characteristics of the black widow spider. I looked at various photo's from the internet and saw different viewpoints and behaviors of the spider, seeing the interesting features of the joints in the legs and the feet tapering to such a small tip. I think that even though they are such menacing creatures, they have a unique appearance (enjoying the view safely from a photograph). I enjoyed pulling out my sketchbook and constructing my series of studies. With each drawing, I focused on qualities and positions of the legs.

GRAPHIC REDUCTION 1

For this study, I translated it into a final black-and-white using a simple black drawing pencil. I emphasized each joint of the leg with white space and liked the outcome.

GRAPHIC REDUCTION 2

I scanned this graphic reduction using the inverted colors of the scanner program to reveal the contrast.

GRAPHIC COMPOSITION

I scanned this study and opened it in PS. For the web effect, I used the line tool with fiberglass style to give it a lighter delicate look.

CONCLUSION

I am pleased with the graphic reductions and composition. The challenging side of this assignment was deciding which spider position to use. I believe the study of the black widow truly shows their image.

Black-And-White Composition

For this assignment I wanted to bring the word "sludge" into a program to work with, but decided to re-create the word "crush" in a different form from the previous word I manipulated into a heart. Reason being, I was having too much fun manipulating text and finding ways to create within various programs.

I used InDesign to create this composition. I sure wish I would remember to write notes! Lets see... I used a linear background in black, the text I used inner bevel glow. For the letter "C" I used a pen tool for the teeth and eyes.

The physical characteristics of the manipulated type possesses the spread-out weighted look as if each letter is under pressure. The figure "C" I believe shows an aggressive face that dominates the other text. Even though the top text seems smaller, the whole image seems as if it is overtaking of the lower text.

Type Collage

This is my interpretation for project 2b: Type Collage, page 69.

The top image is type as texture. I saw the manipulation of the text as layered, yielding a sense of depth.

The middle image is type as shape. The letter "B" and "M" suggests the shape of a heart in this design.

The lower image is type as line. The text takes the form of the shape of the mountain. It guides the viewers eye through the invitation.

I gathered each design from a few books and magazines at home. I scanned each one and used InDesign to make what I would call a collage. Enjoyable project.

Expressive Type & Design

This project was enjoyable. For this assignment I used Photo shop for manipulating the types, but forgot to keep the design composition to a 10 by 10 inch format. Sometimes I forget the details when I open a program - I just want to create!

For the word stodgy I used Blackladder font, hebula styles and liquefy. It progressed into how I see the word: slow, puffy, and sluggish.

My immediate idea of crush was the human emotion. I used Blackoak STD font, liquefied each letter to form the shape of a heart. I hope everyone sees it as a heart!

Seeing the word ornate in my mind reminded me of Blackladder font. I used it and chose my own color. For the small dots I used the text tool, typed a period, chose a different color for each one and placed them in the appropriate place. The end results showed something fancy or ornate.

Now, sludge was fun! I used Cooper Black for font and heatho for layer style. With all of the letters in the same text box I played with the filtering, again. It came out great - showing just what the word means.
